Halloween Media Recommendations

Hi everyone.

Here's some recommendations of stuff that I have some experience with as far as Halloween related media.  Or, at least stuff that might go good with Halloween.

Full disclosure, I don't watch many movies or TV shows.  Most of the stuff I watch are stuff related to media franchises or people or stuff that I'm following or interested in.  Or, sometimes stuff that I've had exposure to when I was younger.

I'm betting that most of you know of stuff like the Charlie Brown or Garfield franchise Halloween cartoons, and most of the mainstream horror franchises.  A lot of this list also doesn't really deal with that.  Most of the items on this list probably aren't also what you automatically think of as far as horror related stuff, sans one or two things.

Now here's my list of items for stuff I'd recommend for Halloween-flavored media that I've been exposed to.

The Boy Who Cried Werewolf (2010 Nickelodeon TV movie)

I've mentioned that I watched this movie recently when Teen Nick aired it, and because it had Victoria Justice in it, I decided to give it a try.  And this was with me going in knowing that it was a kids/family movie, and hence would maybe feel similar to a Halloween episode of Victorious or Zoey 101 (this was filmed between the end of Zoey 101 and the start of Victorious, interestingly).  And considering what I've said, it was a decent movie.  Being a 32 year old man, I wasn't the target audience (also, the movie had been out since 2010, about 9 years ago), and it had a lot of trappings of Nickelodeon's TV shows that were also aimed at kids and young teens.

Granted, that's not necessarily a bad thing.  If you like Victorious, you'll probably like The Boy Who Cried Werewolf, though the only relation that the two have is that Victoria Justice portrayed the lead character on both shows and lean towards being kids/teen/family sitcoms.  It's also not overly scary for young kids and there's very little objectionable content in it, too.  And IMO, it was good for what it was.  No masterpiece, but what Nickelodeon or Disney Channel stuff aimed at kids and teens is?  Don't take it too seriously and just have fun with it.

Eye Candy

If you want to see Victoria in something that's not a family friendly teen or kid's sitcom and demonstrate that she's got some dramatic acting chops (at least in my opinion), you'll also want to check this out.  Also, if you just want something creepier than The Boy Who Cried Werewolf and aren't afraid or turned off by PG-13 rated content, this also might be for you.

Basic plot: a young woman (portrayed by Victoria Justice) who's a talented computer hacker is stalked by a serial killer and uses her hacking skills and a somewhat uneasy alliance with the NYPD to track him down whilst also trying to track down her sister, who was abducted a couple of years earlier.

The show is definitely more mature than The Boy Who Cried Werewolf, and is aimed at the older teens who wanted a more realistic thriller series.  And IMO, Eye Candy delivers.  It's pretty creepy, not in the least that such things have been known to happen in the online dating world.  And that adds another dimension to the story of Eye Candy, in that it's somewhat rooted in reality.  Like other shows made by MTV (both Nickelodeon and MTV are owned by Viacom), it's a bit cheesy and corny, and is no Emmy winner by any means.

But then again, I have to admit that I do find a lot of modern TV shows and such to be crap, especially on MTV.  Only two real good things that IMO came from MTV over the years were Eye Candy and Beavis and Butt-head.

But that's not selling Eye Candy short, as it's fairly creepy, even if you've seen spoilers, you'll still want to see what happens in each episode and especially how things get resolved.  Also, it does show that you can't just pigeon hole all actors or actresses who featured on kids or teens show or family sitcoms as not being very good.  As with Victorious, Ms. Justice was almost every critic's favorite part of Eye Candy, and she's not just eye candy as an actress.

The Twilight Saga

Remember what I said earlier about not watching modern TV shows or movies that often?  Again, full disclosure, I didn't know much about Victorious or Eye Candy when they were brand new.  I did catch some episodes of Eye Candy when they were new, but just a few, and I only recently started watching reruns of Victorious on Teen Nick.  This isn't helped by the fact that though I've sort of followed her a bit since 2014-2015 time range, I only seriously crushed on Victoria Justice over the last year or so.  And I really wish I crushed on her back in 2015 or earlier seeing what she's done with acting and singing/songwriting back then, though she's still working on various TV and musical projects to the present day.

However, I did follow The Twilight Saga films when they were basically new, and when the novels were still popular.  Again, we're not exactly dealing with award winning content here, and we're dealing again with stuff marketed to teens.  And with all book to film adaptions (aside from Marvel Comics properties especially being really good ones who stick to source materials and rarely take liberties), stuff gets lost or altered in translation.

That all being said, I loved and still really like the Twilight films.  The main cast did the best they could with what they were given as far as scripts go.  I know that Melissa Rosenberg is an acclaimed film and TV writer, but The Twilight Saga films aren't her best work and she was often criticized for taking too many liberties with the source material.  But the writing and such was far from the end of the World, and I've seen tons, tons worse (cough, cough, Slender Man--stay away from that pile of bovine excrement).  The films were good for what they were, and made the likes of Kristen Stewart, Rob Pattinson and Taylor Lautner millionaires many times over.

It also saved Summit Entertainment from filing for bankruptcy.  And the previous controlling owners of Summit might not have sold controlling ownership and made more of profit when Lionsgate offered to buy majority ownership of Summit.  Face it, if not for The Twilight Saga, we possibly might not have John Wick.

Also, Twilight is a bit more "kid" friendly than the relatively creepy by comparison Eye Candy TV series mentioned and reviewed a bit above.  I wouldn't recommend it to very young kids because it does deal with mature themes and such.  But it's not ultra scary or creepy.

Bio-Booster Armor Guyver /The Guyver: Bio-Booster Armor(OVA series) and Guyver: The Bio-Boosted Armor (TV series)

OK, I know that some of you want something a bit more hardcore than Eye Candy or Twilight and much more so than The Boy Who Cried Werewolf.  And you'll probably find it here with this sci-fi action/adventure series.

Based on a long running (though on long term hiatus) manga called Kyōshoku Sōkō Guyver
(literally in English Strength Boosting Armor Guyver, usually Romanized as Bio-Booster Armor Guyver) written and illustrated by manga artist Yoshiki Takaya, who was heavily involved in the production and writing of the OVA anime and the TV series anime, Guyver was one of the first manga/anime properties I was exposed to in my youth.

Full disclosure again, I'm not a big manga/anime/comic book fan.  My older brother, however, is.  The Dragon Ball series, Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, Deadpool, Avengers, The Punisher.  Those are just a few of the comic book and anime series that my brothers are actually into. I'm not, but Guyver is one that I'm into.

Basic plot: an organization run by alien beings operating under the cover of an international corporation bent on ruling the world, recovers three alien artifacts.  These artifacts get stolen and lost, one of which is found by a high schooler who accidentally merges with it, turning him into an unwilling armor-plated superhero.  Naturally with a manga that goes back to before I was born (Guyver was first released in February of 1985), much chaos ensues.

Guyver is probably the least mainstream item on this list, and probably the most violent.  Alien creatures getting slashed and blasted apart, eviscerated, and sometime flat out vaporized.  Granted, the violence in either Guyver series isn't very special by today's standards when it comes to anime or even live action films.  However, the first Guyver series was released in Japan from 1989-92, got released in North America in 1992-1994.  It sort of set the standard for blood and gore in anime at the time as well as a few others of the same era.  In some ways, Guyver  can maybe be compared to a cross between Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and Mortal Kombat.

Guyver also was one of the first anime or manga titles to get mainstream success in North America and part of Europe at the time.  So as far as the popularity of anime and manga outside of Japan, Guyver is one of the properties we can thank.

It should be noted that there's two series of Guyver anime. The OVA (original video animation, AKA, direct to video), which ran from 1989-1992 in Japan and was released in North America from 1992-1994 by US Renditions and 1996-2006 by Manga Entertainment.  The TV series was released in Japan from 2005-2006, and released in NA in 2006.

The basic story is the same, but there are big differences in presentation.  The OVA focused more on action, and each episode was 25-30 minutes long, and there were 12 episodes.  The TV series focused more on story telling with toned down violence, were about an hour (counting commercials) and there were 26 episodes.  So which you prefer is up to your tastes, if Guyver is to your taste, to begin with.

I do hope that I covered as many bases as I could with this list.  From kid/family friendly, to kinda creepy stuff aimed at teens, to less creepy, more light hearted teen stuff, to something along the lines of what a lot of us have come to expect from some of the more mainstream horror franchises, yet isn't very mainstream, at least outside of a dedicated audience.

And also, these are just my personal recommendations.  You can take them or leave them, like them or loathe them, or not have an opinion on them.  This is just a list, after all.

However, I do hope that if you read this that you'll at least be reasonably entertain and maybe learn something new.

Everyone have a good one :)

What I Was Up To This Week

Hi everyone.

I know that I've mentioned on my Facebook timeline that I've been pretty busy this week.  Things weren't insanely busy until Wednesday, but I'll proceed in chronological order anyways.

On Monday, before I attempted to get ready for the OSU Trunk or Treat, I did watch The Boy Who Cried Werewolf.  Not the 1973 horror film, but the 2010 Nickelodeon made for TV kids/family horror comedy staring Victoria Justice.  Of note is that the film was filmed in Vancouver in early 2009 (between production of Zoey 101 and Victorious), and was filmed at the same time that The Twilight Saga: New Moon was filmed in the same area.  This resulted in Victoria being shipped with Taylor Lautner (who played Jacob in the Twilight films) and lead to rumors that they were dating.  Victoria and Taylor knew each other for years since Victoria tried to audition for Shark Boy and Lava Girl, and have been friends since--and only that, as both of them openly admitted shortly after the rumors started to fly.  Also interestingly, Victoria is back in Vancouver as I'm writing this working on filming an episode of the Sam Reimi series 50 States of Fright.

Anyways, enough about the trivia and VJ's first run in with internet tabloid journalism.  The film was pretty good for being basically a kids/family film.  It was certainly better than Sony Picture's 2018 master piece of crap Slender Man.   Some episodes of Victorious were scarier than Slender Man.  Of course, I adore Victoria Justice, so I may be a bit biased.  But I do find her to be a pretty good actress after I watched some episodes of Eye Candy a few years back and that was the first major thing she worked on that wasn't a Nickelodeon teen/family sitcom-type deal or a rom-com film.  Also, she's IMO an amazing singer and songwriter.  Look up her cover of the Beetles' "Oh Darling", for example.

After I got done with watching The Boy Who Cried Werewolf, I attempted to get ready for the trunk or treat.  Of course, in the middle of getting ready, I was advised that it was postponed to Wednesday afternoon.  That pretty much left me with nothing much to do until Wednesday.

Moving on to Wednesday, I had work in the morning, and after I got home from that, I got ready for the trunk or treat.  That was a very good experience since I got to hang out with some of my friends from Best Buddies.  I got to talk to some of my friends, including a kind of new friend that I made recently who I think is really cool named Victoria. Not Victoria Justice, they just share the same given name.  I also got to share some ideas for this blog and let them know what I'm doing with it.

Only negative point was that by the end of the night, I felt like I destroyed my ankles.  Between walking and standing at work and at the Trunk or Treat, that's what probably did the damage.  Also, I do have to admit that my friend Victoria can out run me walking--in high heels.  She was also able to easily run in them.  Of course, I'm like the most out of shape person I know, so I was already at a disadvantage there.  But never the less, I just wanted to point that out.  Even with that, I still had a lot of fun and got to hang out with people.

On Thursday I worked in the afternoon, and did a bit of a walk around part of Kingwood Center after work.  In this case, it was with the Richland Newhope Recreation Department.  All I did was walk around the Halloween light display there.  I was still smarting all day with my ankle pain, but it was still worth it to get out of the house and burn some calories.

On Friday, I had gotten over my ankle aches, and got my paycheck from work.  It was there that I decided to implement a plan for making some good Tex-Mex food.  That actually started on I believe Sunday or Monday when I tried some already made burritos from Walmart.  Not impressed, to say the least.  I originally wanted to try Chipotle on Friday, but when I had an order put in to see how their mobile app worked and approximate costs, I was like, "no, maybe I should try Taco Bell".  Chipotle is great, but pretty pricey depending on what you get, and certainly more expensive than Taco Bell, which I love, actually.

But I also decided to make my own kinda like soft taco/burrito/quesadilla items, that will be filled with seasoned sauce, chicken breasts and cheese.  I already make my own fried chicken breasts, and I also love to make like pork roasts and pot roasts, and even whole turkeys when they get discounted post Thanksgiving/Christmas.

So that's what I've been up to this week, and tomorrow or Monday I might be writing about my personal recommendations for Halloween-stuff like TV shows and such you may (or may not) like. As hinted, you may or may not like my recommendations or be indifferent to them, but it stuff that I do find kinda "Halloweeney".

Also, I did hint in the title of a previous post that I have an update on my home theater/TV stuff.  I've been looking at replacing my living room TV with a bigger one that's also got better performance.  The bigger TV deal really got driven home when I was watching The Boy Who Cried Werewolf on Monday.  I had to stand like 6 feet away from the TV to clearly see what was going on.  I know that my vision isn't the best, but it doesn't help when you have a 32" TV when you're sitting like 10-12 feet away from it.

Anyways, I've settled on, if I can find it, an LG 49 inch UM7300.  I've read a lot of very good reviews on it, it's withing my desired budget, and it's much, much bigger and probably brighter than the current LG 32 inch we have in our living room.  I've also had some pretty good luck and results with LG TVs, though all we've had is like 720p TVs.  The 49 inch is also a 4K HD TV.  And one thing that the UM7300 shines at it watching TV shows, sports and movies in bright rooms, which, especially at night because of the overhead light, and during the day especially in summer, our living room is pretty bright.

So that's what I've been up to and sorted out.  Today, I'm looking forward to making my chicken Tex-Mex wraps and maybe talking to one or two people at least.

Everyone have a good one :)

A Little Bit About Me

Hi everyone.

Now this is a blog post about me where I'll share some fun stuff about me. This is me trying to socialize and open up about myself.

Most of you guys probably know that I like history, auto racing and cars, weather stuff, and, of course, Victoria Justice and Victorious related stuff.

However, I'd like to share some stuff related to this. First of all, I like Victoria because she's been a positive influence for me. She's almost always very positive and happy, and I was drawn to her for that reason. Also, the show Victorious, for what it was, was great and the rest of the cast is also cool.

Also, I've been interested in weather related stuff my whole life and how it works. And I've been interested in cars and stuff because my father and uncle used to be involved in racing and were/are mechanics. And it's also from my parents that I also got my interest in history.
Now, here's some stuff that you might not know about me. I'm a bit of an empath. That's one of the reason why I tend to hang around women, because they do seem to be more empathetic, generally, than men, not to discredit my guy friends.

I'm also into stuff like talking about women's fashion and what they do with that stuff. I also like doing women's nails and stuff like that.

I also like to cook, though I've tended to be a bit lazy about it recently. I usually make like fried chicken and chicken taco salads/nachos, which ever you prefer to call it. I'll also probably start soon making chicken Mexican style wraps. Technically you can maybe call them burritos, I guess, but I don't quite consider what I want to do with them the same.

So that's some stuff about me, and I hope that whoever reads this finds it kinda interesting.

A Bit of Halloween Stuff

Hi everyone.

Now that we're in the middle of October and I'll be doing the OSU Trunk or Treat next week (Monday if the weather cooperates, Wednesday if the weather doesn't work out), I think that it's appropriate to talk about the scariest legend ever: Slenderman.

Yeah, you know that internet meme that was a big deal when Victorious was on Nickelodeon and the Twilight films were a big deal (neither Victorious or Twilight have anything to do with Slenderman, just citing them as pop culture things popular when Slenderman was popular)? And that meme that outside of discussions on the moral panic that happened with crimes were being linked to it, but outside of that has faded from relevance.

I'm actually talking about the Slenderman meme because it's a bit of a punching bag for me, because I've never found it scary for one. And two, I just don't understand how people can commit crimes based on something that's not real.

First, the serious stuff. I'm not crapping on Slenderman as a creation. However, it just doesn't make sense to me that people can attempt to kill other people because they claim that this Agent 47 from the Hitman games expy told them to. Either the people who did that just weren't right in the head to begin with (IE, the have legitimate mental problems that manifested themselves in this fashion), or the people who committed such crimes had pretty good lawyers.

I feel for the victims and such, but I'm just curious, and probably a bit perturbed, how such a thing can happen.

Now, on to the fun stuff. I already poked a bit of fun at Slenderman by saying that he looks like Agent 47 from the Hitman video game franchise without a face. But to me, such a thing was never really very scary.

I mean, I watched a few episodes of the MTV thriller series Eye Candy back in the day, and they were scarier than Slenderman. Twilight was scarier than Slenderman. The Jade West character that Liz Gilles played on Victorious was scarier. The Lindy Sampson character as played by Victoria Justice on Eye Candy was scarier. Speaking of Victoria Justice, Tori Vega from Victorious, Naomi from Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List and Victoria herself are scarier than Slenderman. The Undertaker and Kane are scarier. Want me to keep piling it on?
Granted, I was very much an adult when Slenderman came out and was popular, and the whole previous paragraph I wrote was just for fun. But in all seriousness, unless you were a little kid, how would Slenderman scare someone?

I knew that Slenderman wasn't scary when I saw a YouTube video by YouTube personality Penguinz0 (AKA Cr1tikal) playing Slender: The Eight Pages. Pretty hilarious video, if you don't mind dirty jokes and swearing.

Speaking of Penguinz0, he also did a review of that spectacular train wreck of a film called Slender Man that got released last year by Sony. Not only was the film short on scares (yeah, I know, it was also rated PG-13, and most PG-13 horror films tend to suck. But The Messengers was PG-13 and reasonably creepy, and Eye Candy was dealing with PG-13 rated content, and was also fairly creepy), but it was also ill timed. The only relevance that Slenderman had was related to crimes and attempted murders linked to the mythos, but otherwise, Slenderman was a big nothing sandwich.

Slenderman was popular as a meme from basically 2010-2013 or so. Again, to give perspective, Victorious had its original run on Nickelodeon from '10-'13. It started to decline in popularity around 2013-2015. Sony decided to release the film Slender Man in 2018, years past when Slenderman's popularity was past its prime. To further back this up, when Penguinz0 went to see the film to review it for his YouTube channel, he said that there was practically no one there in the theater. To say that Slender Man bombed at the box office was an understatement.

I wrote this post mostly to poke some fun at the Slenderman mythos and such, but also mention how somewhere, somehow the line between fiction and reality got blurred and some bad things happened as a result. And I wanted to share my personal feelings on both issues as we're getting closer to Halloween.

Home Theater Questions (Will Update in Another Post)

Hi everyone.

I'm waiting to hear back from someone about how I'm supposed to get to my counseling appointment tomorrow. I might have to see if my brother will be able to take me, if not, I might have to reschedule. I've been having a horrible time with setting up stuff with my HPC provider lately. They're having staffing problems and I'm thinking of taking a break from working with them until things get sorted out.

Anyways, on to better things. I've been asking around for advice on TVs and such because I'd like to buy a new one for our living room, certainly before the end of the year, preferably early next month or early Dec.

I've settled on a size of 50-55, maybe even 60 inches if I can afford it. I'm trying to get info on brands and models, and what everyone likes before I decide to make a purchase. I've looked on various electronics sites and places like Walmart and Best Buy for prices and reviews. But I'd rather rely on my friends' experiences and opinions.

I've sort of narrowed down the brands to basically Samsung, LG, Vizio, Hisense and TCL, though I'd like to see if anyone else has had good experiences with other brands.

To be honest, this is about all I have for right now. I'm gonna eat some pizza and probably take a nap before I do some other stuff later tonight. I'll maybe tomorrow or Wednesday write a bit about something related to Halloween since we're getting close to that time.

Best Buddies Inclusion Walk

Hi everyone.

After getting some sleep after I got back from Columbus (I was up since 4:30 this morning), I'm now ready to share my thoughts on this day.

I have to admit that today started out slow. Partly because I was tired and being in a mass of people is still a bit overwhelming to me (I do have ASD). However, once things settled down, I did start to talk with some people.

First of all, you might be wondering what exactly I'm talking about. This is probably the first thing I should've brought up. I know that I've probably mentioned it several times, but it was the Best Buddies Inclusion Walk. However, I don't think I went into detail about what it was. It was a gathering and a short walk to encourage inclusion and socialization. It has been held in Columbus every year since Best Buddies had operated in Ohio, though this was my first attendance.

Getting back to what I was doing there, I did start to socialize with some people there. I did start to talk to a new chapter member named Victoria (not my celeb/woman crush, they just happen to share the same name). I also got to talk pretty extensively to a friend I made recently named Mercedes at the event and on our way back. And both Victoria and Mercedes plan on being at the Best Buddies/OSU trunk or treat on the 21st (though I have no idea what they plan on doing if there's bad weather).

So I had a pretty good day. Tomorrow I might make a post asking what content you guys who are following me would want to see on this page going forward.

Probably should've been my first post...

Hi everyone.

This and a few other posts will be kinda edited copy/paste items from a blog that I began on Facebook.  I'll probably primarily use this as my main blog platform going forward...

Well, this is my blog that I've been talking about. I won't be able to really use it much until late Saturday because of work tomorrow and having a very early day on Saturday.

Why early on Saturday? Because I have to be ready to leave the house by like 6:30 so I can be picked up to be taken to Columbus for the Best Buddies Inclusion Walk. It's the first time that I'm attempting it, though mostly I'll be seeing who I'll be riding down with and try and socialize with them and other chapter members.

I'll probably be headed to bed soon because I have to be up early tomorrow for work and I'm just tired from work today.

After Saturday, I'll try and post stuff that's more independent from my normal timeline posts.

Feel free to comment, like or whatever you'd like to do.

Have yourselves a good one

Hi--Intro and First Post

Hi everyone.

I'm setting up a new blog area for me on Blogger as an alternative to my current Facebook blog.  I'm not shutting it down, but I'm trying to give my friends an other alternative if you prefer another option.  I'll probably be using this as my primary blog, though, and I'll link to it in my Facebook timeline and on my main FB page.

Now this is a blog post about me where I'll share some fun stuff about me. This is me trying to socialize and open up about myself.
